Most popular products bought online in Mexico 2021

In 2021, roughly 72 percent of internet users who shopped online in Mexico acquired goods for personal use, including clothing and accessories. Consistent with the previous year's trends, home decorations ranked second, purchased by 38.5 percent of e-commerce users, followed by food and beverages, with 34.7 percent.

What is the Mexican online shopper like?

Approximately 57.5 million internet users made digital purchases in Mexico in 2021, equivalent to over 60 percent of the country's online population. Online shopping remained more prevalent in younger age groups. That year, people between 15 and 44 accounted for three-quarters of Mexican digital buyers. While male and female-identified web shoppers were almost evenly split, men comprised slightly more than half of e-commerce users in the North American country.

Arguments for and against the purchasing channel

They say there's no accounting for taste. In 2021, receiving products at home and saving time were the main reasons for shopping online in Mexico. However, some people are still not convinced to adopt this channel into their purchase habits. When asked about their reasons not to buy over the internet, as many as 58 percent of Mexicans surveyed mentioned that sensory experience was relevant for them at the time of purchase. Moreover, 45 percent found that products had better quality in physical stores.
