Primary energy production from biogas in Germany presented a trend of growth over the years. Between 2013 and 2016, figures constinuously increase to the peak at 8,095 metric kilotons of oil equivalent. However, from 2017 onwards, biogas energy production has been falling.

In 2018, primary energy production from biogas in Germany amounted to 7,631 metric kilotons of oil equivalent. This was the highest energy production among all 28 European Union members. In the same year, the EU-28 primary energy production from biogas was at 16,839 metric kilotons of oil equivalent.
