Khan ahead in race to become Mayor of London
On May 5 this year, London will vote for the successor to Boris Johnson as Mayor of the British capital. The most recent poll of voting intention by YouGov shows that the Labour candidate Sadiq Khan is currently enjoying a relatively comfortable lead. At 31 percent he is sitting 7 points ahead of the Conservative's charge, Zac Goldsmith. The last poll in November had the two running more closely at 26 and 24 - still in Khan's favour.
When asked what the priorities for the next mayor should be, respondents named housing, transport and policing in the top three. Housing, stated by 61 percent of those surveyed, is a hot topic in London with property prices and rental costs extremely high. A recent report by the National Housing Foundation revealed that the average earning London resident (£32,838 p.a.) would need a pay increase of 266 percent to get a mortgage on the average abode - priced at £526,085.
