Russia exported over 43 million metric tons of coal to China, Russia’s major export destination of that commodity, in 2021. Japan ranked second with an export volume of approximately 22 million metric tons. The Netherlands, Poland, and Germany were the main export partners in the European Union (EU).

How much coal does Russia export?

Russia exported nearly 211 million metric tons of coal in 2021, marking an increase by approximately 12.8 million metric tons from the previous year. In monetary terms, Russian coal exports reached nearly 17.6 billion U.S. dollars, up roughly 42 percent from 2020.

Russia in the global coal export trade

Coal exports from Russia were the third-largest worldwide, following Indonesia and Australia. In total, Russia accounted for approximately 18 percent of the global coal export volume. The country’s largest export shipments were to Asia-Pacific markets. The Russian government aims to expand the industry’s export capacities over the coming decade.
