In August of 2018, almost 60 percent of survey respondents in Brazil said that they believed women who have abortions should be prosecuted and be given a jail sentence. The percentage of respondents who advocate for the criminalization of women due to abortion has risen particularly in comparison to 2007, when only 43 percent of the people interviewed agreed with that. In Brazil, abortion is decriminalized in three cases: if the pregnancy is a result of rape, if performing an abortion is the only way to save the woman's life, or if the fetus suffers from anencephaly.
