Methane is a potent greenhouse gas and has a higher heat trapping ability than carbon dioxide.
During his presidency, Donald Trump's administration has undone numerous Obama-era environmental and climate regulations. By 2035, it is estimated that these policy rollbacks will have added 1,829 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent into the atmosphere. Of this amount, 592 million metric tons is expected to come from weakening methane climate regulations from the oil and gas industry. Previously, the oil and gas industry was required to detect and fix leaks of methane - for example, from leaky pipes - however, in August 2020, these standards were reversed.
