In December 2021, the vacancy rate of the NHS workforce in England stood at 8.3 percent. The NHS vacancy rate in the third quarter or 2021/2022 was 10.3 percent within the nursing workforce and 5.8 percent among doctors. Vacancy figures decreased in March 2020, which corresponds to the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the recruitment activity within the NHS remains somewhat disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, a slight increase in vacancies took place in the third quarter of 2021 compared to the same period the previous year.
