Anime accounted for more than 49.6 billion Japanese yen of the export value of Japanese broadcasting contents in fiscal year 2020. It was followed by variety and drama content. The combined export value of genres during that year amounted to 55.83 billion yen.

Figures are based on an annual survey. The survey for fiscal year 2020 was conducted among 91 terrestrial broadcasting operators, 164 satellite broadcasting and cable television operators, as well as 37 production companies.

The category of broadcasting contents encompasses broadcasting rights, online streaming rights, video and DVD rights, program format and remake rights, merchandising rights, as well as other rights. Since fiscal year 2016, merchandising rights explicitly include video game rights. In cases where broadcasting rights are sold in tandem with other rights, those rights are counted as broadcasting rights.
