Total energy consumption by sector - United States 1975-2019

Total energy consumption in the United States has risen steadily since 1975; in fact, primary energy consumption reached an all-time high in 2018, although trends in each sector remain similar throughout 2018 with industrial energy consumption being the highest and the commercial sector’s consumption being the lowest. In 2019, residential energy consumption was 21.21 quadrillion British thermal units (Btu), compared to the 32.58 quadrillion Btu of energy consumed by the industrial sector.

Energy consuming sectors

In general, the pattern of fuel use can vary widely depending on the sector. For example, petroleum is commonly used in the transportation sector but accounts for only a small portion of energy consumed in the electric power sector. There are five main primary energy consuming sectors, where the electric power sector generates most of the electricity in the U.S. and the other four sectors consume most of this electricity.

Energy sources

Consumption of fossil fuels still accounts for the majority of the country’s energy consumption. Trends in energy sources have been evident over the years. For example, coal production peaked in 2008 and has decreased since that period, mostly due to a decrease in consumption for electricity generation. On the other hand, the use of renewable sources is becoming more common, especially wind power.
