In May 2014, multiplatform gamers from around the world were asked which hardware items they were planning to buy in the next 12 months. During the survey, 39 percent of respondents stated that they planned to upgrade they PC’s graphics card, which is a cheaper alternative to buying a new console, which 20.6 percent of respondents planned to buy.
Gaming consoles are a huge component in any gamers’ life if and when they decide to make the investment. The time that gamers spend on their game consoles in a month has been recorded from the second quarter 2012 to the second quarter 2014. During the measured time period, the first quarter of 2014 saw the most time spent with a game console which was 522 minutes per month, per capita. However, in the quarter that followed, monthly time spent per capita had fallen to 444 minutes.
The sales of console and portable consoles in the U.S. were measured in June 2013 and June 2014 and compared. The brand which sold the most units in June 2013 was the Nintendo 3DS which sold 225 thousand units in the U.S. A year later, the Nintendo 3DS continued to perform well with approximately 152 thousand units sold. However, the top selling console in June 2014 was the PlayStation 4, which sold over 70 thousand more units than its nearest rival the Xbox One, with a total of 269 thousand units sold.
