Leading brands of butter in Great Britain 2016-2018, by number of users

Great Britain has two butter brands that are significantly more popular than others. Those brands are Lurpack and Anchor, which in 2018 had an estimated 8.6 and 6.6 million users respectively. However, both brands saw a decline in the number of users when compared to 2017.

Looking at supermarket own brands, Tesco butter is the most popular. This is unsurprising considering Tesco has by far the largest market share of supermarkets in Britain.

Butter consumption

In contrast to other nations across the European Union, the consumption of butter in the UK is relatively low, with an average of 2.7 kilograms per capita in 2017. This was below the EU average of 3.8 kilograms per capita and considerably less than the eight kilograms per capita recorded in France.
Although butter consumption is low compared to other nations, slightly more than 13 million Brits consumed butter once a day or more. This number has increased over recent years.

Imports and exports

Since 2006, imports of butter into the United Kingdom have almost halved, dropping from 147,000 metric tons to 84,000 metric tons by 2018. During this same period, exports more than doubled, increasing from 24,000 metric tons to 62,000 metric tons.
