Mexico: tequila export volume 1995-2022

In recent years, the volume of tequila exported from Mexico has been constantly increasing. In the beginning of the century, exports of the traditional distilled spirit amounted to less than 100 million liters. By 2022, the figure had been multiplied by roughly 6.5, reaching close to 419 million liters and accounting for over 64 percent of the country's tequila production that year.

Where is tequila exported to?

With tequila evolving from a local drink to a worldwide known beverage, the United States has become the main destination for Mexico’s tequila exports. In 2022, exports of the beverage from the country to its Northern neighbor reached approximately 338 million liters, more than 32 times the volume destined towards Mexico’s second most important tequila exports partner, Germany.

José Cuervo as market leader

José Cuervo is the top-selling tequila brand in the world. In the United States, the popular brand, manufactured by Tequila Cuervo La Rojeña S.A. de C.V., accounted for 19.5 percent of the market’s sales volume in 2021. This translated into over 4.8 million nine-liter cases of tequila sold in the North American country that year, an increase of around 59 percent in comparison to 2013 sales.
