Tequila exports volume in Mexico 1995-2023

In 2023, the volume of tequila exported from Mexico amounted to about 401 million liters, representing a decrease of about four percent compared to the previous year. Despite this decrease, tequila's rise in popularity has meant a constant growth for exports overall. In the past 10 years, exports increased by about 133 percent. A similar tendency can bee observed in tequila production during the same time span.

Where is tequila exported to?

With tequila evolving from a local drink to a worldwide known beverage, the United States has become the main destination for Mexico’s tequila exports. In 2022, exports of the beverage from the country to its Northern neighbor reached approximately 338 million liters, more than 32 times the volume destined towards Mexico’s second most important tequila exports partner, Germany.

José Cuervo as market leader

José Cuervo is the top-selling tequila brand in the world. In the United States, the popular brand, manufactured by Tequila Cuervo La Rojeña S.A. de C.V., accounted for 19.5 percent of the market’s sales volume in 2021. This translated into over 4.8 million nine-liter cases of tequila sold in the North American country that year, an increase of around 59 percent in comparison to 2013 sales.
