Google is often referred to as “the search company”. However, search is not the only area that Google excels in. As the following chart, based on StatCounter data shows, the company’s web browser Chrome is the number one gateway to the internet around the world.
Chrome’s lead is particularly impressive in the desktop category, which was dominated by Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and Mozilla’s Firefox for years before Chrome overtook them in 2012 and 2011, respectively.
More importantly though, Chrome also dominates mobile browsing. Thanks to its presence on hundreds of millions of Android devices, Chrome’s mobile market share amounted to 47 percent in June 2017, with Safari, the pre-installed browser on Apple’s mobile devices, a distant second at 21 percent.
