Women Behind the Scenes in Hollywood
Women in Film
In 2017, a quarter of the non-executive producers of the 250 top-grossing Hollywood films were women. That doesn't sound too bad. Still, over the course of almost 20 years this percentage share has not increased markedly, in a direct comparison 1998 to 2017, it's an increase by one percentage point.
Overall, off-screen Hollywood is still male dominated. According to the "Celluloid Ceiling" sponsored by the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at the San Diego State University, women took up 18 percent of the roughly 3.000 behind-the-scenes roles in 2017, such as producers, writers or editors.
