In 2017, a quarter of the non-executive producers of the 250 top-grossing Hollywood films were women. That doesn't sound too bad. Still, over the course of almost 20 years this percentage share has not increased markedly, in a direct comparison 1998 to 2017, it's an increase by one percentage point.
Overall, off-screen Hollywood is still male dominated. According to the "Celluloid Ceiling
" sponsored by the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at the San Diego State University, women took up 18 percent of the roughly 3.000 behind-the-scenes roles in 2017, such as producers, writers or editors.
