Interest in politics varies between countries and for many of the 32 nations included in a Statista Consumer Insights survey between October 2025 and September 2026, politics was in the bottom half of the most frequently named personal interests out of 18 queried. The topic ranked lowest in Saudi Arabia (16 out of 18), Malaysia (16) and the United Arab Emirates (15).
The rank of interest in politics also varied between countries where a similar share of respondents expressed interest in it. For example, 19 percent of French people interested in politics landed the topic in rank 14 there, while in Japan, rank 8 equated to a similar 21 percent of respondents saying they were interested in politics.
In the United States, 21 percent named politics and society as an interest of theirs - rank 14 out of 18. The biggest share of people said they were interested in politics in Brazil and the Philippines, at 41 percent and 36 percent, respectively. The topic ranked highest in Germany, achieving rank 7.
Topics that were more popular than politics in all surveyed countries were sports, movies/music/TV, food and dining, as well as health and fitness. Travel was also more popular in most surveyed countries. While politics isn't popular as a personal interest, the topic of VIPs and celebrities ranked even lower across all surveyed countries.
