Spain: top 10 online stores 2018, by revenue

Over the past few years, turnover in the Spanish B2C e-commerce market has risen steadily, most recently amounting to around US$16.0 billion. Amazon.es is leading the spanish e-commerce market, with a revenue of US$2, 570.9m, directly followed by elcorteingles.es with US$535.1m. Third place went to carrefour.es with over US$400m.

The El Corte Inglés group, a big player in Spain

Founded in 1940, the retail group par excellence dedicated to the department store distribution sector in Spain is El Corte Inglés. The El Corte Inglés group is currently divided into seven business lines: Supercor supermarkets, for the food segment; Sfera, for clothing; Bricor, for DIY and gardening; Viajes El Corte Inglés, for leisure; Informática El Corte Inglés, for technological products; El Corte Inglés Seguros, dedicated to the insurance industry; and, finally, El Corte Inglés, the commercial format of department stores that encompasses all areas of action and manages agreements with other brands. The group’s department stores ranked as the business line that most revenues featured in 2018 by far.

A success story

The two founders of pccomponentes.com, the fourth online store in Spain, were a computer science student and a graduate in Labor Relations that shared the ambition to set up a business on their own. Starting with an initial investment of EUR5, 000 in 2005, ten years later, in 2015, they had invoiced EUR250.0 million without leaving a small village on southern Spanish coast. The company opened an online store in Portugal and in 2018 got a turnover of EUR360.0m.

The e-commerce market encompasses the sale of physical goods via a digital channel to a private end user (B2C). Incorporated in this definition are purchases via desktop computer (including notebooks and laptops) as well as purchases via mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. 

The following are not included in the e-commerce market: digitally distributed services (e.g. travel tickets), online stores dedicated to digital media downloads or streams as well as online stores dedicated to B2B markets nor sales between private persons (C2C). Market volume, market growth and all monetary figures at store level refer to the annual e-commerce net sales after the deduction of returns.
