The main sources of natural gas supply to Europe include self-production, imports via pipelines from Russia and Northern Africa, as well as liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments. In Western Europe, the leading source was self-production, which amounted to 174 billion cubic meters in 2021, followed by imports from Russia, accounting for 75 billion cubic meters of gas storage in the region. In Southern Europe, on the other hand, the two main sources were non-Russia piped gas and LNG. Whereas in Eastern Europe piped gas from Russia represented the leading source for natural gas.
