Value of loans as a share of GDP in the EU 2020, by country
In 2020, Denmark stood out as the European Union country with the highest volume of loans to households as a share of its gross domestic product (GDP). Meanwhile, the volume of loans in Spain and the Netherlands was slightly higher than its GDP, with values between 102 and 104 percent. On the other side of the spectrum, Latvia and Romania were the countries with the lowest levels of indebtedness. Denmark was also the EU country with the highest household debt to gross disposable income ratio.
