As of September 2022, Greece was the country in the European Union with the largest ratio of non-performing exposures (NPE) to total gross loans. On the other side of the spectrum, Swedish banks had an exposure to non-performing loans of just 0.23 percent. Loans are considered non-performing when they are in default or close to being in default. Many standard contract terms specify that exposures become non-performing after being in default for 90 days, but this can vary.
