Europe: non-performing bank exposures ratio 2023

As of June 2023, Greece was one of the countries in Europe with the largest ratio of non-performing exposures (NPE) to total gross loans. On the other side of the spectrum, Swedish banks had an exposure to non-performing loans of just 0.21 percent. Loans are considered non-performing when they are in default or close to being in default. Many standard contract terms specify that exposures become non-performing after being in default for 90 days, but this can vary.

While non-performing loans (NPL) only refer to loans and advances that are unlikely to pay their obligations or that have payments 90 days past their due, non-performing exposure (NPE) also includes the value of debt securities that are non-performing.

Figures for individual countries includes the data of the subsidiaries of corporations domiciled in another country.
