Ad spend of selected insurance brands in the U.S. in 2017

Advertising spending of selected insurance brands in the United States in 2017 (in million U.S. dollars)

by A. Guttmann, last edited May 6, 2019
Ad spend of selected insurance brands in the U.S. in 2017 In a 2017 study ranking insurance companies based on advertising spending, GEICO, Progressive and State Farm took the top three spots with 1.4 billion U.S. dollars, 622 million dollars and 521 million dollars in ad expenditures respectively. These were the highest results, as the remaining contestants spent less than 300 million U.S. dollars that year on advertising their services.
A look into GEICO’s business

GEICO, or The Government Employees Insurance Company, was founded in 1936 as means of providing car insurance to federal government employees who were considered more reliable customers. The company was publicly traded between 1948 and 1996, after which it was purchased by Berkshire Hathaway. Despite its tumultuous past with a fair share of financial problems, today GEICO thrives, as seen by the growing value of earned premiums.
The insurer is widely known for their animated spokesperson, the GEICO Gecko, whose cockney accent and humorous antics in commercials lingers in the memories of TV audiences. In fact, GEICO is very often one of the leading TV advertisers in the United States. However, creating such lasting impressions is costly, so it is not surprising that GEICO’s advertising spending amounts to nearly 1.4 billion U.S. dollars.
