Expedia, Inc. is an online travel company that owns several internet brands, including Expedia.com, trivago, Hotwire.com and Hotels.com, among others. The company was found in the United States in 1996 has seen gross bookings more than triple in the past decade, exceeding 72.43 billion U.S. dollars in 2016. In the same year, Expedia generated 8.77 billion U.S. dollars in revenue, 5.04 billion of which was made in the United States.
Travel websites, such as Expedia.com, have become much more widely used in recent years. With the ability to make hotel reservations, buy plane tickets and even book full vacation packages from the comfort of the home, travel websites are providing an ever popular alternative to the traditional travel agent. In a survey carried out in May 2014, 70 percent of U.S. travelers said they were satisfied with booking their travel on a travel search site, compared with just 39 percent who said the same about travel agents. During the survey it was also revealed that 55 percent of respondents had not used a travel agent at all.
The most popular travel website in the United States was TripAdvisor as of April 2014, with 12.85 million monthly visitors. TripAdvisor’s closest competitors were Priceline Network and Expedia.
