Its branded sites and forums operate as online travel guides offering free user generated reviews of travel-related content. Founded in 2000, Tripadvisor has grown to become one of the most popular travel destination and accommodation websites in the United States. As of 2021, Tripadvisor’s total number of user reviews and opinions reached approximately one billion, covering listings for restaurants, hotels, vacation rentals, and attractions.

Tripadvisor’s revenue and the impact of COVID-19

Tripadvisor, Inc. operates several travel brands that include: Cruise Critic, TheFork, Jetsetter, HouseTrip, and Viator. The company currently maintains an online presence across the world, from Europe to the Pacific, with most of Tripadvisor’s revenue coming from the United States. In 2020 and 2021, the onset of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic had severe impacts on the global travel industry as travelers were forced to stay home to prevent the spread of the virus. Tripadvisor’s revenue across all segments reflected this impact in 2020 and 2021, as the total revenue per segment was substantially lower than pre-pandemic levels. However, despite the reduction in revenue due to COVID-19, Tripadvisor was by far the most visited travel and tourism website worldwide as of January 2022.

The consumers’ perspective: Tripdavisor vs. Expedia

With the United States representing the main source of revenue for Tripadvisor, it is interesting to see how U.S. consumers perceive the company and its competitors. In 2021, the American Customer Satisfaction Score (ACSI) of Tripadvisor was 76, two points more than Expedia and three points above Priceline. That being said, according to Statista’s Global Consumer Survey, roughly a quarter of surveyed U.S. consumers booked a hotel or private accommodation online via Expedia in 2021, while only 12 percent relied on Tripadvisor. Even when looking at the online booking of hotels and private accommodation in the United Kingdom, Expedia ranked ahead of Tripadvisor by seven percentage points.
