Expedia Inc. was founded in 1996 as a small travel division of Microsoft. Originally, it was one travel website, “Expedia.com”. Today it has developed into the parent company of some of the world’s leading online travel websites. These sites include, Orbitz Worldwide, Tavelocity, Trivago and eLong.com. The company also still holds and operates its flagship site Expedia.com.
Since 2010, the the U.S. revenue of Expedia Inc. has grown annually reaching 5.53 billion U.S. dollars in 2017. The company’s global gross bookings have also increased year-on-year in that period, from almost 26 billion U.S. dollars in 2010 to over 88 billion in 2017. Expedia’s success in this time could be attributed to the company’s increased selling and marketing expenses. Since 2010, they have more than doubled from 1.24 billion U.S. dollars to 5.3 billion U.S. dollars in 2017.
In 2016, Expedia, Inc. was the leading travel agent in the world, with sales of 72.4 billion U.S. dollars. The Priceline Group came in a very close second with global sales of 68.1 billion U.S. dollars. These two travel giants were both far ahead of the rest of the pack that year. The company with the third highest sales was American Express Travel, which generated around three fifths of either companies’ sales.
