The number of banks in Germany decreased steadily between 1958 and 2022. As 2022, there were 1,458 credit institutions in the country, 561less than in the previous year. Despite seeing a notable downward trend in the total number of credit institutions, Germany had far more credit institutions than any other country in Europe in 2022.
