The estimated value of point of sale (POS) transactions rose in many European countries between 2018 and 2019, only to decline again in the following year. The 2024 forecast, however, predicts that numbers for POS transaction values will rise again. Russia had the highest value of POS transactions in Europe in 2020, followed by the United Kingdom (UK) and Germany.
In 2020, payments in European countries were influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. In many countries, stores were (temporarily) closed, leading to a decline in the value of POS transactions. Between March 9th and April 20th 2020 alone, European retailers were expected to face a loss of 3.26 billion British pounds due to disruptions.
