Annual pig meat per capita consumption in Italy 2016-219 Over the last decade, the food diet of Italians seems to have changed. According to a survey conducted in 2016, almost 60 percent of Italians claimed to have reduced their consumption of meat. This result seems to be confirmed by the actual per capita consumption of pig meat, which decreased by 4.6 kilograms between 2010 and 2015, and the beef consumption which declined even more sharply from 24.9 to 17.4 kilos per head.
A common trend ?

In regard to pig meat, the behavior of Italian consumers does not differ that much from the one of French and Germans. On the contrary, in these two countries the decrease was even more significant. Between 2008 and 2015, in Germany the consumption has decreased by 2.1 kilograms, while in France it has fallen by 4.2 kilograms. According to these data, Europeans were more and more aware of the consequences of high meat consumption.

The future of pig meat in the EU

As far as pig meat consumption in Europe is concerned, a forecast was published in 2018. According to this report, which took in consideration the EU 28, the overall consumption of pork was around 21 million tons in 2016 and should decrease to 20.8 million tons in 2027
