The most recent terrorist attack on the subway of the second biggest Russian city of St. Petersburg cost 10 peoples' lives on Monday. The deadliest most recent attack before that was claimed to have been carried out by the Islamic State against a Russian airliner travelling from the Egyptian resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh to St. Petersburg in October 2015.
Russia has frequently been the target of major terrorist attacks recent history. The deadliest had to do with militants from the restive Caucasian republic of Chechnya taking hostages in Moscow and Beslan. Russia had fought a bloody war in Chechnya from 1992 to 1996. Apartment bombings in three towns in 1999 caused the Russian government to re-engage militarily in Chechnya.
Chechnya is a semi-autonomous republic within the Russian Federation on the Caspain Sea.
