Credit card and debit card count in Luxembourg

Approximately two thirds of payment cards issued in Luxembourg were credit cards, reaching a total of over two million in 2022. Debit cards were found less often in the country, as that year there were around one million of these cards. The numbers provided are estimates, based on the figures central banks have to supply. Owning a payment card does not immediately indicate it gets regularly used, as there are large differences within Europe when it comes to the use of certain payment methods. In the case of Luxembourg, credit cards are likely issued by large foreign banks and are not necessarily meant for domestic retail payments.

All figures provided concern cards issued by resident PSPs. Numbers originally, up until 2021, exclude cards with an e-money function.

The source, however, considers Luxembourg a special case. Unlike other countries in Europe, it has many e-money payments as most transactions in the country come from foreign workers. It seems the numbers for 2022 include this e-money aspect within the number of cards, although the source does not clarify this.
