Leading payment methods for products or services purchased online in Belgium from 2015 to 2019*

Leading payment methods in online retail in Belgium 2015-2019 This statistic displays the findings of a survey on leading payment methods for products or services purchased online in Belgium from 2015 to 2019. In 2019, it was found that 21 percent of respondents reported paying online with their debit card, using Bancontact. Bancontact is a local payment scheme and is the Belgian market leader when it comes to electronic payment methods.
Like in other European countries, credit and debit cards are a popular form of digital payment methods for either physical purchases in brick-and-mortar-stores or for online purchases. In 2016, there were approximately 67 POS transactions per card in Belgium, compared to 98 in the Netherlands and 21 in Luxembourg.

Consumers from the Benelux are familiar with the use of credit cards. More traditional payment means like bank transfers and payments by card at the point of sale for online purchases are still quite popular, but respondents have been using these payment methods less often. However, mobile payment methods are on the rise in Belgium as more respondents of this survey indicated they used My bank's app and PayPal in 2017, than in 2016. The same trend can be seen for the amount of mobile banking subscriptions in Belgium, which has increased as well over the last few years.
