Share NFC payments compared to total debit card payments Netherlands 2015-2017 This statistic shows the share of the Near Field Communication (NFC) transactions compared to the total number of debit card transactions in the Netherlands from the fourth quarter of 2015 to the fourth quarter of 2017. In the fourth quarter of 2017, the share of NFC payments was approximately 48 percent of all debit card payments. NFC payments were introduced in the Netherlands in 2014 and mainly involves contactless payments made at points of sales, with either a debit card or a mobile phone or payments via QR codes. These methods are supported and developed by Dutch banks, such as ING and Rabobank, with larger Fintech-services such as Android Pay, Apple Pay and Pay from Samsung not yet being released in the Netherlands. In the summer of 2017, ABN Amro, ING, Rabobank and De Volksbank will launch the overarching payment service of Payconiq, which was already tested in Belgium and uses QR codes. Ever since its introduction, the use of NFC payments has increased in the Netherlands. In the second quarter of 2014, approximately 2.3 percent of the total debit card payments consisted of NFC payments. Two years later, this reached a share of 32 percent. In 2016, approximately 50 percent of all contactless payments had a transaction amount of ten euros or less.
