Regardless of the decreasing number of fixed telephone subscriptions in the United States since 2006, the number of mobile wireless subscribers has been constantly on the rise, which proves wireless data to be a key market for telecommunication companies. As the number of unique mobile subscribers is predicted to reach about 6 billion by 2020 – roughly double the amount of 2010 – the total spending on wireless data telecommunication worldwide is likewise expected to grow significantly to nearly 500 billion U.S. dollars by 2019.
The wireless telecommunication market in the United States was worth about 190 billion U.S. dollars in 2016. Verizon and AT&T are joint leading wireless carriers in the United States, with each accounting for about one third of the market of wireless subscriptions. Although AT&T reported more revenue than Verizon in 2016, Verizon has a slight lead in wireless revenue in the same year, which was more than twice the revenue generated from its wireline service. Verizon is also the leading wireless telecom provider in the United States in terms of subscribers. In the first quarter of 2017, Verizon had 146 million wireless subscribers, surpassing AT&T by more than10 million subscribers.
