Google: brand value 2006-2022
Google’s Revenue and App Store competition
The multinational internet service corporation recorded the highest ever revenue, nearly 182 billion U.S. dollars in 2020. This was an increase of close to 21 billion dollars over the previous year. The company lagged behind Apple with nearly half the revenue, but soared ahead of Microsoft in terms of cash flow in the same year. Google and Apple are direct competitors with rival operating systems – iOS and Android.
Another platform where the two tech companies compete with each other is mobile apps. The Google Play Store and the Apple App Store, both provide platforms for developer apps, as well as some of the backend infrastructure they need. In return, both companies get 30 percent of the app developers profits. Google Play Store has over 1.5 million apps, most of which are paid apps or apps that offer in-app purchases. Google also generates revenue from its Play Store, through paid music, movies, books, and subscriptions. In early 2019, the gross app revenue for Google Play Store amounted to 7.1 billion U.S. dollars, close to half of Apple’s App Store revenue worldwide. This changed only slightly by the third quarter of 2020, where Google’s Play Store revenue moved up to 10.3 billion U.S. dollars but the App Store generated 19 billion.
