Casual games were the most popular genre of mobile gaming apps among Android gamers worldwide in 2018, with a mobile device penetration rate of 58.38 percent. Puzzle apps closely followed in second place with a penetration rate of 56.65 percent.

The top Android game by reach worldwide in 2018 was Subway Surfers. The endless runner game was first released by publisher, Kiloo Games, in 2012 and is available for all main mobile platforms. Candy Crush Saga ranked second, reaching over 19 percent of Android mobile device users. The legendary candy puzzle game first hit smartphone screens in 2012 and soon became a worldwide phenomenon. While the game itself is free-to-play, players have the option of making in-game purchases to help them get past particularly tricky levels. Player spending in Candy Crush mobile games worldwide reached over 1.4 billion U.S. dollars in 2018. Despite the fast-paced nature of mobile gaming and the new releases that hit our screens every day, Candy Crush Saga still remains one of the most popular free-to-play games on the market some seven years after its release.

The rise of mobile gaming

Once a niche part of the gaming industry, mobile gaming has become the jewel in the crown of the market in the last few years. The mobile gaming segment amassed revenue of 61.6 billion U.S. dollars worldwide in 2018, almost six times more than the premium console segment. The mobile segment is projected to become even more prominent in the next few years, with its share of total gaming revenue worldwide forecast to grow from 18 percent in 2012 to almost 60 percent by 2021.
