Cat and dog owning households in Italy 2010-2017 In 2017, 22 percent of Italian households owned at least one pet dog. In that year, the share of households owning at least one cat was slightly lower, amounting to 19 percent. When compared to the European average, dog ownership in Italy is in line with the rest of the continent. On the other hand, the estimated share of European households owning a pet cat was 24 percent in 2017, five percent higher than Italy.
Pet dogs in Europe

In 2017, the dog population in Italy amounted to almost seven million (excluding strays), making it the fifth largest in the European Union. Germany ranked highest with a dog population of approximately 9.2 million in 2017, followed by the United Kingdom with 8.65 million. While the number of pet dogs in Italy has remained stable since 2010, it increased steadily in Europe and was estimated at 85 million in 2017.

Pet cats in Europe

When considering pet cats, Italy was home to approximately 7.5 million cats (excluding strays) in 2017, the fourth largest population in Europe after Germany, France and the United Kingdom. As for pet dogs, the pet cat population in Italy also remained stable since 2011. Again, as for pet dogs, the pet cat population increased steadily in Europe, reaching almost 103 million in 2017, which means there is approximately one cat for every five individuals on the continent.
