In 2018, 27 percent of Italian households owned at least one pet dog. In that year, the share of households owning at least one cat was lower, amounting to 18 percent. When compared to the European average, dog ownership in Italy is in line with the rest of the continent. On the other hand, the estimated share of European households owning a pet cat was 25 percent in 2018, seven percent higher than Italy.

Pet dogs in Europe

In 2018, the dog population in Italy amounted to approximately seven million (excluding strays), making it the fourth largest in the European Union. Germany ranked highest with a dog population of approximately 9.4 million, followed by the United Kingdom with 9 million. While the number of pet dogs in Italy has remained stable since 2014, it increased steadily in Europe and was estimated at 85 million in 2018.

Pet cats in Europe

When considering pet cats, Italy was home to approximately 7.3 million cats (excluding strays) in 2018, the fourth largest population in Europe after Germany, France and the United Kingdom. As for pet dogs, the pet cat population in Italy also remained stable since 2014. Again, as for pet dogs, the pet cat population increased steadily in Europe, reaching almost 104 million in 2018, which means there is approximately one cat for every five individuals on the continent.
