This statistic illustrates the number of rural residents in China living below the poverty line in selected years from 2000 to 2018. Since 2000, poverty in rural China has been constantly decreasing. In 2018, approximately 16.6 million people in rural areas of China were still living in poverty. This figure has decreased by over 90 percent compared to 2005.
