Divorce rate in China 2007-2017

Divorce rate in China from 2007 to 2017 (per 1,000 population)

by Statista Research Department, last edited Aug 15, 2019
Divorce rate in China 2007-2017 As of 2017, the divorce rate in China has climbed to a high of 3.15 per 1,000 population. This number has been constantly increasing since 2000.
Divorces worldwide

The divorce rate in China has soared from around 0.96 per thousand population from almost two decades ago in 2000 to 3.15 in 2017, while the number of registered marriages had revealed a general trend of increasing from almost 8.5 million in 2000 to around 10.6 million in 2017, peaking in 2013 at almost 13.5 million. Compared to other more developed countries in Asia, the divorce rate in China was rather high. For example, the divorce rate in Singapore in 2017 was almost two million and that in Korea in 2018 was slightly over two million. Furthermore, such a divorce rate in the rest of the world could be considered high. In Russia, for example, the divorce rate is on the high side of the spectrum and in many countries (Australia, Poland, Panama), the rate is between one to three million. On the other hand, the trend in China matched with most countries where divorce rate either stayed almost constant (Singapore, Panama) or grew over the years (Australia, Poland). This phenomenon is widely believed to be associated with the recent change in societal attitudes regarding accepting divorces and simplification of legal processes.

Dating scene in China

For the younger generations, dating and marriage happens (if at all) at a much later life stage, compared to their parents. The fact that China has the highest working hours in the region does not ease the dire situation for the singles in China, most seemed to be in employed as professionals or employed in the media sector where long working hours and high work pressure is quite common.
