The value of realized exits in which venture capital firms sold their share in a company fluctuated during the period displayed. In 2017 venture capital firms saw a total of 12 billion euros in divestments, a decrease of approximately 33 billion euros from the previous year. With that being said the value of unrealized exits in which venture capital firms continue to have shares or equity in a company have continued to be high, despite a decrease in unrealized value between 2016 and 2017. In 2017 the leading method of venture capital backed exits in Europe was through trade sale, which accounted for 42 percent of exits.
