Founded in Birmingham, England in 1765 by Sampson Lloyd II, John Taylor and their two sons, the Lloyds Banking Group is one the United Kingdom's oldest and biggest banks. The Lloyds Banking Group, which consists of Lloyds Bank, Halifax, Bank of Scotland and Scottish Widows, has millions of retail and commercial customers, making it one of the most popular banks in Europe. However, the group has been struggling with losing customers in recent years, as customers seems to more and more move away from traditional banks to more newly founded online-only banks. The group employs approximately 65,000 individuals, with the majority headquartered in the UK.

The banking industry in the United Kingdom is dominated by five large, chartered banks, and Lloyds is one of them. In addition to Lloyds, the largest five banks consist of HSBC, Barclays, NatWest, and Standard Chartered. Lloyds Banking Group has consistently held the title of being one of Europe's largest banks. In terms of total assets, the Lloyds Banking Group is in the 11th largest bank in Europe, with total assets worth more than one trillion euros in 2021. In its home country, Lloyds is the third largest bank, also in terms of total assets, after HSBC and Barclays. The Group is also a top European bank in terms of market capitalization, and also ranks second among the UK banks.

The Lloyds Banking Group operates in several different segments: retail banking, commercial banking, insurance and wealth, and equity investments and central items, though the largest segment is retail banking. More than half of their customer deposits - which exceeded 475 billion British pounds in 2021 – came from retail banking.
