As a survey from the first quarter of 2022 showed, low shipping prices were the main purchase driver for four out of ten U.S. consumers shopping on Amazon. Other leading reasons behind Amazon's appeal were fast delivery (37 percent), affordable product prices (36 percent), and Prime membership (36 percent).
The king of marketplaces
Consumers around the world have increasingly made Amazon their go-to choice when shopping online. Revenues generated by the Seattle-based company illustrate this. Just during the fourth quarter of 2022, Amazon generated revenue of approximately 149 billion U.S. dollars. Amazon's biggest market is the United States, with net sales amounting to around 356 billion U.S. dollars in 2022. Germany is the second-largest cross-border market, with net sales amounting to nearly 34 billion U.S. dollars, closely followed by the UK at around 30 billion U.S. dollars.
Amazon.com
Amazon is the world’s most visited online marketplace. In May 2022, Amazon's website accounted for over 20 percent of global desktop visits to e-commerce marketplaces, surpassing competitors such as eBay (4.9 percent) and AliExpress (3.1 percent). That month, about 2.4 billion visitors flocked to Amazon.com. YouTube, the video-sharing platform, was the primary driver of social media traffic to the marketplace, with over fifty percent of referrals.
