Nintendo: net sales 2008-2018 This statistic shows the worldwide net revenue made by video games company Nintendo from fiscal 2008 to 2018. In 2018, Nintendo's net sales amounted to 9.95 billion U.S. dollars, up from 4.36 billion a year earlier.
Nintendo - additional information

Nintendo originated in 1889 in Kyoto, Japan, as a card company, with its first playing card game called Hanafuda. The company shifted into the video game industry, of which it is famous for today, in the 1970s. Famous characters such as Mario have become widely identified as a kind of “mascot” for Nintendo and the video game industry as a whole. In fact, the most recent revival of the Mario brand in the form of a mobile game under the title of Super Mario Run proves that Mario is still alive in the hearts of its fans. As of December 2016, Super Mario Run was the fastest mobile game to reach 10 million downloads.
Despite its famous mascot, Nintendo’s net revenue has steadily decreased in recent years. In 2009 the company’s net revenue stood at 18.76 billion U.S. dollars but starting with 2012, when the revenues have first dropped below the 10 billion mark, the sales results have been decreasing each year. The Americas remain an important region for Nintendo. As of March 2016, the Americas were still the leading region for the company in terms of revenue as it generated over 225.8 billion Japanese yen (approximately 2 billion U.S. dollars at March 2016 exchange rates).
Since its beginnings, Nintendo has been known for its innovation in the industry. The introduction of Nintendo’s Wii generated some of the largest sales in Nintendo history. In the 2009 fiscal year, Nintendo sold 25.9 million Wii consoles. Comparatively, the Wii U which was launched in 2013 only sold 3.45 million units between April and September 2013.
Wii Sports and Mario Kart Wii have been some of the best selling games for the Wii, selling 82.8 million units and 36.8 million units respectively, as of March 2016. The popularity of the Wii was likely due to its ability to appeal to a wider audience. The Wii Remote is used as a pointing device that allows users to play games through physical movement as well as by pressing buttons making it easy to use for all ages and abilities.
