In 2016, Nintendo reported an income of 146 million U.S. dollars, representing close to a 50 percent decrease from the previous year. In 2016 Nintendo's revenue was largest in North America, amounting to more than 225 billion yen (approximately 2.21 billion U.S. dollars). Japan was the second highest grossing region for the company. Product-wise, Nintendo owes the majority of its profitability to handheld hardware sales, with handheld software coming in second. The latter product brought in 109.18 billion Japanese yen (roughly 968 million U.S. dollars) in revenue in 2016.
