According to a survey on digital usage in China, around 81.6 percent of respondents had used WeChat for social networking as of the third quarter of 2022. The Twitter-like site Sina Weibo, the short video app Douyin , and its domestic rival Kuaishou were among the most popular social network services in China.

How successful is WeChat in China?

The country’s most popular messaging app, WeChat, boasted about one billion monthly active users as of 2022. For many Chinese consumers, WeChat is part of daily life, helping them to organise tasks such as paying bills, ordering food delivery, and calling a taxi. Official records stated that about 54 percent of WeChat users spent more than four hours per day on the app. Furthermore, many corporates found this multifunctional app crucial in maintaining their business operation and competitiveness in China.

Large userbase with high engagement

The social media scene in China is huge and mobile-centric. In 2021, the social media penetration rate amoounted to 68 percent in China, slightly higher than countries like the United States and Japan. In 2019, the number of active mobile social media users in China totalled one billion, making it the largest social media user population in the Asia-Pacific region. While the user number has shown signs of reaching a saturation point, Chinese consumers have been spending more time online, with a considearble daily usage of social media in 2022.
