About This Statistic
This statistic shows the number of active e-mail accounts worldwide in 2014 and a forecast of the further development from 2015 to 2019. While there where roughly 4.1 billion active accounts in 2014, the number is expected to increase to almost 5.6 billion towards the end of the decade.
Email has taken over in a world where everyone has an electronic device at their fingertips. The internet has boomed in recent years, for example, the amount of people who send and receive emails in Great Britain has grown dramatically since 2007, where only 57 percent of the population did so. In 2016 that number has grown, with an estimated 79 percent of people in the country using email to connect with others.
The rise in the number of active email accounts can also be accounted for due to smartphone usership. In the United Kingdom for example, people aged between 16 and 24 have increased their ownership of Smartphone's by over 20 percent since 2012. This gives people the chance to email whilst on the move, something which was not around even 15 years ago.
