Statistics and facts on digital media in Portugal

Digital media refers to any communications media created and stored in digital format, which is broadcasted via electronic devices. The rise of the internet as a vehicle for information and entertainment purposes has paved the way for the increase in its number of users worldwide, and has shaped the media industry landscape. In Portugal, digital media surpasses traditional media in the share of users for almost every sector. It is consumed by a high share of people of all age groups through video and audio streaming, gaming, social media, and digital publications.

Digital video and audio

Digital video is at the forefront of digital media in Portugal, and its users mostly belong to young generations searching for entertainment outside of the conventionalized formats. HBO Max heads the list of video-on-demand platforms to which the Portuguese wish to subscribe, while YouTube Music is the leading streaming app in the country.

Gaming

Gaming has a considerable expression in Portugal, in terms of the share of internet users that are players. However, unlike digital video, online purchases related to gaming are decreasing compared to the years of the COVID-19 pandemic. This may be due to the normalization of leisure habits, which were disturbed during the pandemic crisis when internet users found gaming a consoling hobby.

Digital publications

With Portugal presenting a high share of digital news buyers, and with digital news sources being preferred over print sources by an increasing share of the population of all ages, it is expected that digital news agencies bolster their online reach of subscribers. In this market, TVI, Correio da Manhã, and SIC present the highest reach of users, even though it is the state-owned news agency RTP that is worthy of the highest level of trust in news sources by the public. Despite the growth registered in the e-book market for other European countries, Portugal presents low usage rates of this media service, while registering high shares of social media users.

Illegal digital media activities

While digital media usage is generally on the rise in Portugal, illegal media activities are also high in this and other European countries, ascribing their appeal to their low or null costs. The vast majority of Portuguese have made illegal digital copies of books, while a small share has streamed illicit IPTV.
