Non-alcoholic beverages in the Nordic countries - statistics & facts

Denmark

The revenue of the non-alcoholic drinks market in Denmark increased over the last decade, and is expected to continue to grow from 2022 to 2026. Due to the coronavirus crisis and the restrictions that came with it, revenues were significantly lower in 2020 and 2021 than in the preceding years. Based on revenues, the soft drinks market was the leading segment in 2021, followed by juices, and bottled water. This is also reflected in consumption figures: over the past years, the consumption volume of soft drinks was always higher than that of other non-alcoholic beverages.

Finland

The Finnish non-alcoholic drinks market displayed growth as well. The years 2020 and 2021 were also exceptions here, but according to forecasts, the market will grow again in the coming years. The revenue of the non-alcoholic beverages market in Finland in 2021 was approximately 1.6 billion euros. The vast majority of this revenue was generated by the soft drinks segment, which accounted for around 1.2 billion euros that year. The trend of a steadily increasing revenue in the country goes hand in hand with the growing non-alcoholic beverages market volume. This figure is forecast to grow by roughly 22 million liters by 2026.

Norway

In the neighboring country Norway, the situation was similar – soft drinks were highly popular. Measured by sales volume, soft drinks sales amounted to more than 602 million liters and were ahead of non-alcoholic beverages such as water and energy drinks. Beverages containing an alcohol share higher than 4.75 percent are only allowed to be sold by Vinmonopolet, which is the government-owned alcoholic beverage retailer. Still, Vinmonopolet does not only sell alcoholic drinks, as non-alcoholic beverages are also available. Among the most-sold alcohol-free drinks in Vinmonopolet in 2020, Oddbird Richard Juhlin Blanc de Blancs (non-alcoholic sparkling wine) ranked first with nearly 58 thousand liters. Thomas Henry Ginger Beer and Fever-Tree Mediterranean Tonic Water ranked second and third.

Sweden

The Nordic country Sweden, bordering Norway, Finland, and connected to Denmark by the Øresund/ Öresund Bridge, reached a revenue of approximately 29 billion Swedish kronor from the sales of non-alcoholic beverages in 2020. Of this amount , almost 21 billion Swedish kronor were generated by the retail sales of soft drinks, mineral waters, and juices. Systembolaget is a government-owned chain of liquor stores, mainly selling beverages with an alcohol content higher than 3.5 percent. Besides alcoholic drinks, the retailer also sells non-alcoholic beverages. In the fourth quarters of the previous years, the sales of alcohol free drinks were consistently the highest, amounting to 860 thousand liters in 2020.
