The WannaCry cyber attack that affected more than 200,000 systems over the past few days exploited a vulnerability in the aged Windows XP operating system. Even though Microsoft stopped providing security updates for XP in 2014, it remains the third most popular desktop operating system to this day. According to NetMarketShare, roughly 7 percent of PCs worldwide ran on Windows XP in April 2017.
