As of March 18, 2020, Iran accounted for the largest number of new deaths caused by coronavirus (COVID-19) in the Eastern Mediterranean region at 135 deaths. The World Health Organization's strategic objectives as a response to the outbreak include interrupting human-to-human transmission, early identifying and isolating care for partients, identifying and reducing transmission from animal sources and addressing crucial unknowns regarding clinical serverity, extent of transmission and infection, as well as treatment options.
