Number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in the UK since January 2020

On January 31, 2020, the first two cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in the United Kingdom (UK) were confirmed in Newcastle upon Tyne, a city in the Northeast of England. The number of cases in the UK has since risen to 1,538,794, with 11,299 new cases reported on November 24, 2020. Since the beginning of September there have been a significant increase in the number of daily cases in the UK.

COVID deaths in the UK

The coronavirus has so far been responsible for 55,838 deaths in the UK as of November 24, 2020, and since May 7 the UK has had the highest death toll from coronavirus in Europe. The incidence of deaths in the UK is 84 per 100,000 population, which is the third highest in Europe behind Belgium which has had a coronavirus death rate of 139 per 100,000, and Spain.

Regional breakdown

The North West of England has the highest amount of cases in the country with 296,113 confirmed cases as of November 24. Yorkshire and The Humber, and the West Midlands have 203,867 and 154,445 cases respectively.

The source adds that: "From 10 April, figures for positive tests include positive case results from swab testing for key workers and their households." Which is referred to as 'Pillar 2' of the testing strategy'
Furthermore on July 2, according to the source there were methodological improvements and a revision to historical which lowered the total number of cases by 30,302.
The source mentions that the data for October 3 and 4 include 15,841 additional cases from between September 25 and October 2, due to a technical issue.
