Factors affecting the use of cash in Japan 2022
In a survey conducted in Japan between July 2021 and February 2022, more than 70 percent of consumers stated that they paid with cash when making small purchases at a store. The second most common occasion to use cash as a payment method, with approximately 21.5 percent, was for regular payments such as utility bills. A small minority of around six percent of respondents stated that they use cash to pay for purchases made online, for example by paying in a convenience store.
