Among the EU-28 nations, the UK had the 5th highest internet penetration rate in 2015. Only seven percent of users didn't have access to the internet in the past 12 months. Almost the entire nation had access to the internet with an estimated number of 54.2 million monthly users in 2016. This number is expected to rise to 56.7 million monthly users in 2021. In the same time frame the penetration rate across the UK is expected to rise from 90.64 percent to 94.85 percent.


The British use the internet most commonly for sending and receiving emails. Other activities pursued by 60 percent or more of adults in Great Britain are searching for information, social networking, reading the news and online banking. This leads the digital audience in the UK to spend over 41.9 billion minutes on Google sites, more time than on any other internet property. Google's audience in the UK amounts to 41.9 million unique visitors. On average adults in the UK spend 21.6 hours a week on the internet.

Mobile internet penetration in the UK is expected to grow from 73.91 percent in 2016 to 84.55 percent in 2021. In the same period the absolute number of mobile internet users is expected to rise to 54.21 million in 2022. Google sites hold the same first place on mobile devices as they do among all internet audiences.
